According to the American Animal Hospital Association, a study by the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center found that the identifiable breeds most likely to bite a person in an attack include pit bulls, mixed breed dogs, German shepherds, terriers, and Rottweilers. Other breeds that topped the list include Cocker Spaniels, Retrievers, Chow-Chows, Collies, Huskies, and St. Bernards. The breeds at the bottom of the list that are least likely to attack a person include Dalmatians, Pointers, Great Danes, Pekingese, and Spitz dogs.

The study also looked at which breeds caused the most damage per bite, based on the severity of the injuries caused, the average height and weight of the breed, and the head shape of the animal. Pit bulls and mixed breed dogs also topped the list for dog bite severity, given their relative weight and bite strength in an attack. Great Danes also topped the list in terms of bite severity; however, they also rank as one of the breeds least likely to attack a person.
