Common Types Of Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclist

With thousands of miles of beautiful scenery and year-round warm weather, it comes as no surprise to most that Florida is one of the most popular destinations for motorcyclists. However, despite the large number of motorcycles on the road, drivers in larger vehicles still do not take care to check for motorcycles on a road. The results of this negligence can be devastating for motorcyclists, and the experienced personal injury lawyers at Earnhart Law are here to help. Call or contact the office today for a free consultation of your injury claims.

Head-On Collisions

The type of motorcycle accident that has the highest rate of injury and fatalities is the head-on collision. This type of accident occurs the least often, but it is often the most catastrophic. A head-on accident happens when the front end of a motorcycle collides with the front end of a larger vehicle. Common causes include drowsy or distracted driving and when a person is driving under the influence.

Rear-End Accidents

Rear-end accidents are more common and occur when the front end of a larger vehicle collides with the rear end of a motorcycle. This type of crash occurs most often at stop signs or traffic lights when a driver is not paying attention and fails to stop in time to avoid an accident with the motorcycle in front of them. The injuries incurred by motorcyclists in rear-end accidents can be very serious, as the motorcyclist often does not see the other vehicle coming from behind and can do nothing to mitigate the crash.

T-Bone Crashes

T-bone, or broadside, accidents happen when the front end of one vehicle strikes the side of another. When a motorcyclist is involved in a T-bone accident it can be devastating, as the motorcyclist is often thrown over or caught under the larger vehicle. This type of accident almost happens exclusively at intersections, although it can also happen anywhere that a vehicle enters the roadway like a driveway or parking lot entrance.

Sideswipe Accidents

The last type of common motorcycle accident in Florida is the sideswipe accident. Motorcycles are small enough that they can disappear in the blind spot of a larger car or truck. If the drivers of these vehicles are negligent in checking their blind spots before changing lanes, they can sideswipe a motorcycle next to them. Sideswipe accidents can cause very serious injuries both when the larger vehicle makes contact as well as when the motorcyclist swerves to avoid the larger vehicle but crashes into something else.
